Sense of...Music

What does one feel when hearing those sounds?
What does a heart experience when surrendering to the undescribable beauty of the three-or more-polyphonic-singing - the specific singing in which one or two voices build the melody while other hold the monotonic double or treble tone? The so called technique of "shouting out" (извикване), the "chain-breathing"...?

The nature of that singing has its own logic. And the beauty of this logic is to be found in the numerous ways in which you could interpret it:
  • The "chain-breathing" in which all voices strive for the attaining of the effect of "as-though-we-don't-have-the-need-of-taking-a-breath": The principle which builds the basis of this technique is the so called "breathe-when-your-neighbour-is-not-breathing". Yes, you do contribute with your individual voice to the building of the beautiful unity called song but you have to think as a part of the whole - as a part of one common brain.
  • The building of polyphony - the art of holding on to your melody not allowing the other voices to pull you off your melody path: The art of following your own guideline and still contributing to the building of a common magnificently sounding masterpiece...
  • The polyphony which rests on the setting of voice layers: Some voices build the main melody, others, in contrast, play kind of a "supporting" role. To know that you're not playing the main role and that you only grant the supporting basis which would help building a gorgeous monument of sounds and tones letting others be the "heroes" of the song. Because you are conscious enough of the fact that playing - at first sight - the minor part, you actually play a major one.

Does the average "western" listener associate it with something exotic, with wildness and primary nature? How does he perceive the irregular rhythms, the lodgement of voices - not being able to distinguish every single voice but perceiving them all as an inseparable whole?

No need for watching, just sinking into the perfectly harmonized voices...of the Balkans.

Melodies, tones and voices in which one can find history, culture, ethnic consciousness, common rhythm of life, religion...all locked up in one.

The art of understanding it can be hardly learned.
The art of feeling it can be at least given a try.

Ja, ja, ja, fast richtig.. :)
